Germain Lefebvre (singer, 1889)

Germain Lefebvre (born June 3, 1889 in Saint-Henri , † May 12, 1946 in Montreal ) was a Canadian opera singer (bass), choir director and music teacher .

Lefebvre studied in Montreal with Alexis Contant , Salvator Issaurel , Alphonse Lavallée-Smith , Rodolphe Mathieu and Joseph Saucier . From 1906 to 1914 he was deputy choir director at the Church of St. Henri , then a year solo bassist at Notre Dame . From 1914 until his death in 1946 he led the choir of the Church of St. Jean Baptiste .

He was one of the founding members of the Orphéon de Montréal and gave concerts in Canada and the USA. His repertoire included roles such as Joseph in L'Enfance du Christ by Hector Berlioz , Vitellus in Jules Massenet's Héodiade and the high priest in Camille Saint-Saëns ' opera Samson et Dalila . In 1923 he sang the role of Antipas in the world premiere of Guillaume Coutures Jean le Précurseur . He also performed on the radio and gave concerts with his wife, the pianist Maria Lefebvre . In 1922 he worked as a teacher at the Schola Cantorum ; he also taught privately. His son Germain Lefebvre , also a singer and choir director, followed him at the Church of St. Jean Baptiste .
