Joseph Oller , in Catalan Josep Oller i Roca , (* 1839 in Terrassa , Spain , † 1922 in Paris ) was a Catalan-French impresario and is known as the inventor of the totalizer .

Life

In 1842 Oller's family moved to Paris . He went back to Spain to study at the University of Bilbao . Cockfighting was popular there.

After 1850 he acquired the meadows along the Seine (today's Maisons-Laffitte ) from Jacques Laffitte and redesigned them into horse running tracks. In 1878 they were converted into a hippodrome . Around 1865, the totalizator system was introduced at the horse races in France , and many sources mention a Parisian perfume dealer named Pierre Oller as the inventor, who is said to have suggested this type of bet to a bookmaker friend, on the other hand Joseph Oller.

In 1888 he built the Music Hall Olympia in Paris. In 1888/89 he founded the Moulin Rouge together with Charles Zidler .

Joseph Oller died in Paris at the age of 83 and was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery .
