During the Paris World Exhibition of 1889 , he and his business partner Joseph Oller founded the famous Moulin Rouge dance hall in the Montmartre district of Paris , which opened on October 6, 1889. Zidler gave up his position as director of the Hippodrome circus and hired stars from the music, dance and entertainment scene such as La Goulue , Yvette Guilbert , Jane Avril , Mistinguett and the art farter Joseph Pujol for performances and cabarets . Charles Zidler was friends with the painter and graphic artist Henri Toulouse-Lautrec , who designed numerous posters for the Moulin Rouge . Little is known about the rest of his life.

Yvette Guilbert reports the following statement by Zidler in her memoir:

“Look, my dear Yvette… I'm like you… I got up on my own, just through my work. When I was ten I had to go into this disgusting Bièvre , this stream of mud and tannin. I tanned cowhides in the stinking water because my boss wouldn't do it. I learned to read and write when I was fourteen, but I'm not very strong… […] Because I had a flair for organizing entertainment, one day I met Oller, and after we became partners in Paris, I did we opened Les Montagnes Russes (in Olympia ), Le Grand Hippodrome , [...] then the Moulin rouge , then the Jardin de Paris . "
