Mistinguett [ mistɛːˈgɛt ] is the stage name of Jeanne Florentine Bourgeois (born April 4, 1875 in Enghien-les-Bains , France , † January 5, 1956 in Bougival , France), a French actress and singer.

Life

She started her career as a flower seller in a restaurant in her hometown; she also sang popular ballads for the guests. There she was given the name Miss Tinguette , from which she composed her later stage name.

Mistinguett made her debut in 1895 at the Casino de Paris , after which she also appeared in shows at the Folies Bergère , the Moulin Rouge and the Eldorado . Her daring acts enchanted the Parisians and she became the most popular entertainer of her time and the highest paid entertainer in the world. As the female counterpart to Maurice Chevalier , she embodied the ideal type of Parisian woman. She even lived with the actor for a while and in 1916, through relationships, helped him to return early from German captivity.

In 1919 she had her legs insured for an astonishing sum of 500,000 francs for the time. Artistically she competed with Josephine Baker .

In 1920 she recorded her song Mon Homme for the first time (music: Maurice Yvain, text: Albert Willemetz and Jacques-Charles), which became known worldwide under the English title My Man (sung by Fanny Brice ) and became part of the repertoire of many pop musicians - and became a jazz singer. Mistinguett had the climax of her fifty-year career in the 1920s and 1930s. She made many films, including playing Eponine in an early version of Les Misérables (1913).

She had a long-standing relationship with the much younger Maurice Chevalier, but it was her passionate love affairs with an Indian prince, with King Alfonso XIII. of Spain and with the future King Edward VIII of England who became legendary.

Jeanne Bourgeois died at the age of 80 and is buried in her native town on the Cimetière Enghien-les-Bains.
