March 14 : The world premiere of the opera István király ( King Stephen ) by Ferenc Erkel takes place in Budapest.

March 28 : The premiere of the operetta Don Cesar by Rudolf Dellinger takes place at the Carl-Schultze-Theater in Hamburg.

April 5 : The opera Noé by Georges Bizet is premiered ten years after the composer's death in Karlsruhe. With this opera, Bizet completed an unfinished work by his father-in-law Jacques Fromental Halévy . The libretto is by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges .

May 4th : Premiere of the romantic opera Des Matrosen Heimkehr by Franz von Suppè in Hamburg.

October 24 : The operetta The Gypsy Baron is premiered with great success in the Theater an der Wien with music by Johann Strauss and based on the libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer based on the novella Sáffi by Mór Jókai . The conductor is the composer, the premiere cast consists of Joseph Josephi , Alexander Girardi and Ottilie Collin .

November 30th : The world premiere of the opera Le Cid by Jules Massenet takes place at the Grand Opéra Paris .
