Opera
- March 3 : The premiere of the Opéra-comique Carmen by Georges Bizet with the libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy based on the novel of the same name by Prosper Mérimée at the Opéra-Comique in Paris is greeted coolly by the audience. The work's global success only began months later. Bizet no longer lives to see the success of his work: he dies of a heart attack near Paris on June 3, his sixth wedding anniversary, at the age of 36.
- March 10 : The opera Die Königin von Saba by Karl Goldmark based on the libretto by Salomon Hermann Mosenthal celebrates a great success at its world premiere at the Hofoper in Vienna and becomes one of the most successful operas of the late 19th century.
- July 19 : The world premiere of the opera La falce (The Sickle) by Alfredo Catalani takes place in Milan.
operetta
- February 27th : The operetta Cagliostro by Johann Strauss (son) is premiered at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna . The libretto is by Camillo Walzel and Richard Genée . The piece from the time of the golden operetta era is initially a huge success, but gradually loses the audience's favor.
- March 25 : Trial by Jury , an operetta with music in one act by Arthur Sullivan based on a libretto by WS Gilbert , has its world premiere at the Royalty Theater in London. The piece is after Thespis Gilbert and Sullivan's second joint opera production. The work, which is very popular with critics and the public, will be performed 131 times during the first season.
- November 3rd : The world premiere of the operetta Die Kreolin by Jacques Offenbach takes place at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
Further world premieres
- March 14th : Vyšehrad , the first part of Bedřich Smetana's symphonic poem Mein Vaterland (Má vlast) , premieres in Prague. The second part Die Moldau (Vltava) has its world premiere on April 4th . Smetana completed the third part of Šárka on February 20 , but it will be two years before the first performance.
- The 4th piano concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns has its successful premiere.
