Light and shadow (polka)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Licht und Schatten is a polka mazur by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 374). The work was performed for the first time in mid-October 1875.

Remarks

The polka was put together based on motifs from the operetta Cagliostro in Vienna . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 369 , 370 , 371 , 372 , and 373 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. The title name Licht und Schatten has nothing to do with the operetta. The polka was announced in mid-October 1875 and probably premiered by a military band. On October 17, 1875, the polka was played under the direction of Eduard Strauss in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein . In the program it was announced as new but not, as was customary at the premiere, with the addition "for the first time". It can also be concluded from this that the polka had premiered shortly before. The work was dedicated to the artist Marianne Stokes, who was then still called Marianne Preindlsberger.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 33 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
