Musikverein Vienna
- January 6th : The Wiener Musikverein building , built in the historicizing style by Theophil von Hansen , opens with a festive concert. The acoustics of the Great Hall are consistently praised by the critics. The keystone will be laid on March 1st .
Dance and dance music
- Johann Strauss (son) : The composer brought out the following waltzes in 1870: Rejoice in Life op 340 and New Vienna op 342.
- The Boston appeared in the USA around 1870 , a slow waltz in contrast to the Viennese waltz .
World premieres
- March 16 : The Fantasy Overture Romeo and Juliet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was in Moscow under the baton of Nikolai Grigoryevich Rubinstein their first performance . In summer the composer subjects the work to a first revision.
- March 19 : The opera Il Guarany by Antônio Carlos Gomes has its world premiere at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan with overwhelming success . The literary model for the libretto by Antonio Scalvini and Carlo D'Ormeville is the novel O Guarani by the writer José de Alencar from 1857 . The work is considered to be the first Brazilian opera and belongs to the romantic genre of Indianismo . In Brazil, the work will be performed on December 2nd in the Teatro Lyrico Fluminense on the occasion of the 45th birthday of Emperor Pedro II under the title O Guarani . The staging of this performance comes from the composer himself.
- May 25 : The ballet Coppélia ou La Fille aux yeux d'émail by Léo Delibes based on a libretto by Charles Nuitter and Arthur Saint-Léon is premiered with triumphant success at the Paris Opera . The plot is based on ETA Hoffmann's story The Sandman . Eugenie Fiocre dances the role of Franz.
- June 26th : The opera Die Walküre by Richard Wagner , the second part of the tetralogy The Ring of the Nibelung , is premiered at the Royal Court and National Theater in Munich under the direction of Franz Wüllner . Among others, Sophie Stehle , Kaspar Bausewein , Therese Vogl , Heinrich Vogl and August Kindermann will sing .
- September 25th : The fourth and final version of the opera Prodaná nevěsta ( The Bartered Bride ) by Bedřich Smetana based on a libretto by Karel Sabina is premiered at the Prozatímní divadlo (Interim Theater) in Prague. This version is ultimately an international success.
Others
- Antonín Dvořák completed his first opera Alfred , which was not performed during his lifetime. The libretto is by Carl Theodor Körner , the work is Dvořák's only opera based on a German text.
