Charles Nuitter

Charles-Louis-Étienne Nuitter (actually: Truinet , born April 24, 1828 in Paris ; † February 24, 1899 there ) was a French librettist, translator and archivist.

From 1861, the trained lawyer devoted himself together with Théodore de Lajarte to archiving the sources in the possession of the Paris Opera and made them accessible to the public. In 1875 the archive and library were housed in the Palais Garnier .

He also wrote around sixty ballet scenarios and libretti for composers such as Jacques Offenbach , Hervé , Léo Delibes , Édouard Lalo , Charles Lecocq , Isidore Legouix and Ernest Guiraud . As a translator, he made a special contribution to the dissemination of Wagner's operas in France. Even Verdi reprized his performance as a translator. In addition to these contemporary works, he also translated operas by Weber , Bellini and Mozart .
