Ragnvald Soma (born November 10, 1979 in Kvernaland ) is a former Norwegian football player . From 2009 to 2012 he played for SK Rapid Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga .

Club career

The early years

Soma began his professional career at Bryne FK in the Norwegian second division . Before that, he made it into Norway's U-15 team at the small Frøyland IL, which was the first time he was able to attract attention. At Bryne, which is considered a "training club" in Norway, he quickly found his way into the regular formation and was able to celebrate promotion to the Tippeligaen in 1999 . Despite several offers from larger clubs from the Tippeligaen, he stayed with Bryne and made the final breakthrough. With five goals as a defender, he was the team's second best scorer and sensationally managed to stay up with Bryne. Since he was an integral part of the Norwegian U-21 team at that time and caused a sensation, several offers from abroad followed.

Jump to England

In January 2001, then manager Harry Redknapp brought him to West Ham United's Premier League for £ 1.5 million . Previously, the move caused some controversy, as a statement by Soma was published in the English press, in which he said he would rather switch to Serie A to AC Perugia , which is also interested , as the players in England drink too much alcohol. Soma vehemently denied this statement and claimed to have been misquoted. In London he was supposed to follow in the footsteps of defensive routinist Nigel Winterburn , but that never happened. In one and a half years he could never oust Winterburn and only came to seven Premier League appearances. At the end of the 2000/01 season he was voted number 1 by West Ham fans on Kumb.com in the “Worst Signings” category, which is the biggest waste of transfer money every year. Since he did not meet the expectations placed on him in the following season either, he was transferred back to Bryne for free in July 2002 due to a lack of interested parties. Before that, a move to Austria to FK Austria Wien had been smashed due to the excessive transfer demand from the Londoners. But he still has his place in the West Ham history books, as he was used in the 2001 FA Cup in the 1-0 win against Manchester United from the 88th minute of the game. The victory is considered one of the club's great moments.

Back in Norway

Back at Bryne, he immediately got a regular place again and offered attractive services. 2003 was followed by a disappointing season in which Bryne was last and relegated.

Since Soma had made a name for himself again through consistently good performances, it was impossible for Bryne to keep him. He moved to the Norwegian top club Brann Bergen . As a result, he was promoted to defense chief and national player of Norway in Bergen . After two successful years at Brann, which were not crowned by any title, he moved within the Tippeligaen to Viking Stavanger .

Although it was agreed not to disclose the exact transfer modalities, the move is considered one of the most spectacular in Norway. Stavanger paid at least a five-digit euro sum including player Bjørn Dahl as a bonus. At Viking, Soma followed four mixed seasons without a title win. The best placement was booked third in the 2007 season. After Stavanger had made an enormous transfer effort for Norwegian standards to win a title, savings were made from the 2009 season. This moved Soma not to renew his contract with Viking, despite an offer with increased salaries. In order to earn a transfer, a change of club in the summer of 2009 was considered likely. Rapid Vienna was traded as the most promising candidate for months . However, the change failed for the time being due to the Norwegians' transfer request. Soma also commented on the possible transfer and announced in an interview that he wanted to switch to Rapid.

SK Rapid Vienna

On August 14, 2009, SK Rapid Wien announced that Ragnvald Soma had signed on for two years plus an option for another. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose the transfer fee.

As a result, he immediately captured a regular place in the "Green-Whites" and was able to celebrate a great success in his first week at Rapid, climbing up to the Europa League against Aston Villa . On September 26, 2009, he scored his first goal for Rapid in the championship game against FC Magna . He was eliminated from the squad for the summer break of 2012 after Brazilian central defender Gerson was signed.

Change to Denmark

September 2012 it was announced that Soma had signed with the Danish champions FC Nordsjælland . Soma got a contract until the end of the year.

National team

Soma went through all of Norway's youth selections .

Internationally he caused a sensation for the first time as a member of the Norwegian U-21 team . The team could not qualify for a final round, but was riddled with players like John Carew , Azar Karadaş or John Arne Riise as a team with above-average potential, which attracted scouts from all over Europe. Soma was considered the chief of defense.

It was only in 2004 that he made his debut in the senior national team in a friendly against Belgium . As a result, he was called up in early 2005 by coach Åge Hareide for the friendly internationals against Kuwait , Bahrain and Jordan . He was used in all three games.

Then he was no longer considered for the senior national team until that date (October 2010) .
