Blue Danube Waltz and other works by Johann Strauss (son)
- February 15 : The world premiere of the waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube op 314, by Johann Strauss (son), takes place in the Dianabad hall in Vienna . The work is presented as a choral waltz with a satirical text by Josef Weyl from the Wiener Männergesang-Verein and the band of Infantry Regiment 42, both directed by Rudolf Weinwurm . The work 'strikes a fire' and the term “Schlager” is used for the first time in the criticism. Nevertheless, the waltz, the orchestral version of which will be performed for the first time on March 10 , initially did not gain acceptance .
- In addition to the Danube Waltz , the composer brought out the following works in 1867 : Künstlerleben (Waltz) op. 316; Telegrams (waltzes) op 318; Praise of Women (Polka) op 315; Postillon d'amour (Polka) op 317; Light Blood (Schnellpolka) op 319; and the Figaro Polka op 320.
Opera
- March 11 : The French first version of Giuseppe Verdi's Grand opéra Don Carlos, based on a text book by Joseph Méry and Camille du Locle, premieres in Paris . It is based on the play of the same name by Friedrich Schiller . Because of its length, the opera has to be shortened by 20 minutes before the world premiere. In October it will be translated into Italian and performed in Bologna.
- April 3 : The world premiere of the opera La Grand 'Tante by Jules Massenet takes place at the Opéra-Comique in Paris
- April 6th : The opera Dózsa György by Ferenc Erkel is premiered in Budapest.
- April 27 : The opera Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod based on the drama Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare has its world premiere at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris.
- May 11 : Arthur Sullivan's first opera, Cox and Box , a triumviretta in one act based on the libretto by Francis C. Burnand , premieres at the Adelphi Theater in London.
- November 18 : The opera Bogatyri ( Heroes ) by Alexander Porfirjewitsch Borodin is premiered at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.
- December 13th : The world premiere of the opera Malbrough s'en va-t-en guerre by Léo Delibes takes place at the Théâtre de l'Athénée in Paris.
- December 18th : The comic opera The Contrabandista by Arthur Sullivan and Francis C. Burnand premieres in London.
- December 26th : The world premiere of the opera La jolie fille de Perth ( The beautiful girl from Perth ) by Georges Bizet takes place at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris.
operetta
- April 12th : The world premiere of Jacques Offenbach's opera-bouffe The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein with Hortense Schneider in the title role takes place at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris . The libretto of the operetta is by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy .
- April 27th : The operetta Banditenstreich by Franz von Suppè , which belongs to the golden operetta era, has its world premiere at the Carltheater in Vienna.
requiem
- Beginning of December: The first three movements - one does not want to expect more of the audience - of A German Requiem by the composer Johannes Brahms will be premiered by the Wiener Singverein in a concert of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna . The audience reacts mixed, but the work has received mostly positive reviews from critics such as Eduard Hanslick .
Teaching and Research
- The Danish composer and conductor Niels Wilhelm Gade becomes the first director of the newly founded København Music Conservatory in Copenhagen.
Others
- Gioachino Rossini wrote for the 1. April bis 3. November held World Fair in Paris , the piece Hymn to Napoleon III. and his brave people as the official exhibition anthem .
- Charles-Marie Widor wrote his first work Variations sur un thème original op. 1 for piano, which can be identified today .
- Alexander Muir wrote the patriotic song The Maple Leaf Forever after the founding of the Canadian Confederation .
- Timothy Daniel Sullivan composes the song God Save Ireland under the impression of the trial of the so-called Manchester Martyrs , who were convicted and executed for killing a police officer in a prison breakout . The anthem quickly became popular in the Irish Republican Brotherhood .
- Edvard Grieg marries his cousin Nina Hagerup .
