- April 27 : The first Teatro Colón , built by Charles Pellegrini with Verdi's La traviata, opens in Buenos Aires .
- May 5 : On the occasion of the opening of the Art Treasures of Great Britain art exhibition in Manchester, Charles Hallé founded an orchestra, later the Hallé Orchestra , which held daily concerts there.
- August 18 : Cosima Liszt marries Hans von Bülow in the Hedwig Church in Berlin. On their honeymoon, the two visit Richard Wagner in Zurich, who at the time lives in the garden house of the Villa Wesendonck .
- August: James Lord Pierpont releases the winter song One Horse Open Sleigh in Boston .

- January 7 : The . Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major by Franz Liszt has its premiere in Weimar.
- February 15 : The symphony in F major with the nickname Urbs Roma by Camille Saint-Saëns , composed the previous year, is premiered by the Société des jeunes artistes du Conservatoire under Jules Pasdeloup .
- September 5 : On the occasion of the inauguration of Goethe and Schiller monument is in Weimar , the Faust Symphony by Franz Liszt first performed. It is inspired by Goethe's drama Faust I and represents a symphonic poem that is close to the symphony form .
- December 29th : The symphonic poem No. 11 Hunenschlacht by Franz Liszt is premiered in Weimar.
- Franz Liszt's Dante Symphony , inspired by Dante Alighieri's verse epic Divina Commedia , has its world premiere.
- Louis Spohr completes his Symphony No. 10 in E flat major . It is the composer's last symphony. It initially appears as Opus 156 but is later withdrawn by the composer.
- Franz Berwald completes his piano quintet No. 2 in A major , which he has been working on since 1850.
- Niels Wilhelm Gade presents his Symphony No. 6 in G minor , Op. 32 to the public.
- Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein composes his Piano Trio No. 3 in B flat major, Op. 52, the Cello Sonata No. 2 in G major, Op. 39 and the Violin Concerto in G major, Op. 46.
- Joachim Raff publishes the work Ode au printemps, concert piece for piano and orchestra , op.76.
- Giacomo Meyerbeer writes the piece Pater noster for mixed choir .

- January 15 : The operetta Les trois baisers du diable by Jacques Offenbach is premiered in Paris (Bouffes-Parisiens, Salle Choiseul).
- February 12 : The operetta Croquefer, ou Le dernier des paladins by Jacques Offenbach is premiered in Paris (Bouffes-Parisiens, Salle Choiseul).
- March 12th : The opera Simon Boccanegra by Giuseppe Verdi based on a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave has its world premiere at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. The play Simón Bocanegra by Antonio García Gutiérrez serves as a template . The performance is a failure and soon disappears from the repertoire, which prompts Verdi to revise the material.
- April 9th : The world premiere of the operetta Le Docteur Miracle ( The Wonder Doctor ) by Georges Bizet takes place at Jacques Offenbach's Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
- April 30 : The world premiere of the operetta Dragonette by Jacques Offenbach takes place at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
- May 6th : World premiere of the opera Erzsébet by Ferenc Erkel in Budapest .
- May 16 : The operetta Vent du soir, ou L'horrible festin by Jacques Offenbach is premiered in Paris (Bouffes-Parisiens, Salle Choiseul). The work serves as a template for the operetta Chief Evening Wind or The Greyish Feast , which appeared in Vienna in 1862 .
- July 27th : The operetta Une demoiselle en loterie by Jacques Offenbach is premiered in Paris (Bouffes-Parisiens, Salle Choiseul).
- August 16 : Giuseppe Verdi's opera Aroldo with the libretto by Francesco Maria Piave is successfully premiered at the Teatro Nuovo in Rimini. It is the reworked and completely redesigned opera Stiffelio , which, under pressure from the censors, may only be performed in a distorted form in Italy.
- October 3 : World premiere of the opera Maître Griffard by Léo Delibes at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris
- October 10 : The world premiere of the one-act operetta Le Mariage aux Lanternes ( The Engagement at the Lantern ) by Jacques Offenbach based on the libretto by Michel Carré takes place at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
- October 31 : At the Carltheater in Leopoldstadt near Vienna, the posse with singing Tannhäuser by Johann Nestroy (text) and Carl Binder (music) is premiered and receives mostly positive reviews. The play is based on the travesty Tannhäuser and the brawl on the Wartburg by Hermann Wollheim and parodies the opera Tannhäuser and the Singers' War on Wartburg by Richard Wagner , which had its Vienna premiere on August 28 at the Thalia Theater .
- November 13 : The operetta Les deux pêcheurs, ou Le lever du soleil by Jacques Offenbach is premiered in Paris (Bouffes-Parisiens, Salle Choiseul).
- December 27 : World premiere of the opera Pianella by Friedrich von Flotow in Schwerin.

- Saverio Mercadante brings out his opera Pelagio at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples .
- Friedrich von Flotow's opera Johann Albrecht, Duke of Mecklenburg premieres in Schwerin.
- The opera Le Carnaval de Venise by Ambroise Thomas also came out in 1857.
