Instrumental and vocal music (selection)
- February 17th : The world premiere of the third version of Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat major by Franz Liszt with Hector Berlioz as conductor and Franz Liszt as soloist takes place in the Small Hall of the Weimar Palace . Liszt dedicated the work to the piano virtuoso Henry Litolff .
- Franz Berwald is composing his piano concerto in D major .
- Michail Iwanowitsch Glinka wrote the choral work Prayer in a Difficult Life Situation .
- Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein composes the Piano Sonata No. 3 in F major, Op. 41, the Viola Sonata in F minor, Op. 49 and the 3rd Symphony in A major, Op. 56.
- Charles Gounod's Mass solennelle en l'honneur de Sainte-Cécile (Cecilia Mass ) is premiered in St-Eustache de Paris on November 22nd, 1855, the anniversary of Saint Cecilia.
- In the same year Gounod also brought out his Symphony No. 1 in D major and Symphony No. 2 in E flat major .
- Johannes Brahms composes the following three works, all of which are only published posthumously: (1) Gavotte WoO posth. 3; (2) 2 Gigues WoO posth. 4 and (3) 2 Sarabanden WoO posth. 5.
- Bedřich Smetana performs his Triumph Symphony in E major , op. 6 for the first time. The work is dedicated to the Austrian Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary and quotes the Austrian Imperial Hymn composed by Joseph Haydn in 1797 .
- Georges Bizet wrote the symphony in C major in November , but it was neither performed nor printed during his lifetime. The work was not premiered until 1935. Presumably the work was a student homework.
Musical theater
- June 2 : The world premiere of the opera Jenny Bell by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber on the libretto by Eugène Scribe takes place at the Opéra-Comique in Paris.
- June 13 : Giuseppe Verdi's opera Les vêpres siciliennes ( The Sicilian Vespers ) based on a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Charles Duveyrier premieres in French at the Paris World Exhibition at the Théatre Impérial de L'Opéra in Paris.
- July 5th : Jacques Offenbach , whose plays are not performed by the established Parisian theaters, opens his own theater, the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens, with a world premiere of his half-hour operetta Les deux aveugles ( The Two Blinds ) with the libretto by Jules Moinaux .
- August 31 : With the operetta Die Zaubergeige based on a libretto by Eugène Mestépès and Antoine Chevalet, Jacques Offenbach brings out another stage work.
- October 17 : The opera Le bousard de Berenchy by Adolphe Adam is premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The libretto for the two-act work is by Joseph Bernhard Rosier.
- December 29th : The world premiere of the operetta Ba-ta-clan by Jacques Offenbach takes place at his Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris. The libretto is by Ludovic Halévy . The two artists call their work a chinoiserie musicale .
Further world premieres:
- Giovanni Pacini : The opera Niccolò de 'Lapi will be performed for the first time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- The operas Jaguarita l'Indienne and L'inconsolable by Jacques Fromental Halévy premiered in 1855.
- Albert Grisar premieres his opera Le Chien du jardinier at the Opéra-Comique in Paris.
- Emilio Arrieta publishes the following three zarzuelas : (1) Guerra a Muerte ; (2) La dama del Rey and (3) Marina . The third piece consists of two acts and is based on a libretto by Francisco Camprodón.
- The opera La Cour de Célimène by Ambroise Thomas will be premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The libretto is by Joseph-Bernard Rosier .
- The first opera by the composer Georges Bizet , entitled La maison du docteur , was written around 1855 and was not performed during the composer's lifetime.
- Jacques Offenbach : In addition to the three works listed above, the composer also created the operetta Trafalgar sur un volcano in 1855 .

- Johann Strauss (son) : The composer brought out the following works in 1855: Nachtfalter (waltz) (waltz) op 157; Panacea Sounds (Waltz) op 161; Glosses (Waltz) op 163; Sirens (Waltz) op 164; You Only Live Once (Waltz) op 167; Salves of Joy (Waltz) op 171; Thoughts on the Alps (Waltz) op 172; Ella-Polka op.160; Souvenir polka op 162; Aurora Polka op 165; Night Violet Polka op 170; Leopoldstädter Polka op 168; Marie Taglioni Polka op 173; Le Papillon-Polka op 174; Handels-Elite-Quadrille op 166 and the Bijouterie-Quadrille op 169.
