- January 20 : The comic opera Die Opernprobe or The Noble Dilettantes by Albert Lortzing has its world premiere at the Stadttheater in Frankfurt am Main , while the composer is dying in Berlin.
- March 11th : Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto with the libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on the drama Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo is premiered in Venice. The opera is a great success.
- April 16 : The first version of the opera Sapho ( Sappho ) by Charles Gounod with the libretto by Émile Augier has its world premiere at the Grand Opéra in Paris.
- August 20 : The world premiere of the romantic opera Aurelia, Duchess of Bulgaria by Conradin Kreutzer takes place in Kassel.

- The opera Medea by Saverio Mercadante will be premiered at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples.
- François Benoist composes the ballet Pâquerette in collaboration with the choreographer Arthur Saint-Léon .
- The opera Bonsoir, monsieur Pantalon by Albert Grisar is premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris .
- Giuseppe Lillo will perform his opera La gioventù di Shakespeare ossia Il sogno d'una notte estiva ('The youth of Shakespeare or A Midsummer Night's Dream') for the first time at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples . The libretto for the three-act work is by Giuseppe Sesto Giannini.
- Raymond ou Le secret de la Reine an opera by Ambroise Thomas is also premiered in 1851.
- Moreover heard Emilio Arrietas opera Pergolesi first time in public.
- Joachim Raff's heroic opera König Alfred will be premiered in Weimar . Gotthold Logau wrote the libretto for the four-act work.
Instrumental and vocal music (selection)
- February 5th : The 3rd symphony by Robert Schumann is premiered as part of a colorful concert evening under Schumann's direction in Düsseldorf. The premiere is interrupted by spontaneous applause between the movements; at the request of the enthusiastic audience, there is a second performance a good month later, on March 13th . In October the score will be published by Nikolaus Simrock in print.
- March: Robert Schumann composes the sonata Märchenbilder . The work probably goes back to the four-part poem Märchenbilder , which the Berlin poet Louis du Rieux sent to Schumann on February 19 .
- Schumann's 4th Symphony , composed as early as 1841 , is published.
- Robert Schuhmann also composes three overtures to the works The Bride of Messina by Schiller op 100; Julius Caesar von Shakespeare op 128 and Hermann and Dorothea von Goethe op 136. In addition, the Violin Sonata No. 1 in A minor, Op. 105 and the Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 121.
- Richard Wagner composes the Valkyries ride .
- George Onslow composes with the Trio for piano, violin and violoncello op 83 his last work recorded with an opus number.
- Michail Iwanowitsch Glinka completes the Spanish Overture No. 2 (Souvenir d'une nuit d'été à Madrid) . Which he has been working on since 1848.
- Franz Lachner composes his Symphony No. 8 in G minor, Op. 100.
- Niels Wilhelm Gade publishes his string quartet f and the organ piece Drei Tonstücke op.22 .
- Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein publishes the first version of his 2nd Symphony Okean ('Ocean') in C major op.42 and the Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major op.35. In addition, the Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major op.13 is to be released and Two Piano Trios, Op. 15.
- Johann Strauss (son) brought out the following works in 1851, most of which are still occasionally played at concerts today: Aurora-Ball-Tänze (Waltz) op 87; Oracle Proverbs (Waltz) op. 90; Rhadamantus Sounds (Waltz) op 94; Idylls (waltzes) op 95; Gambrinus Dances (waltzes) op 97; Fraunkäferln (waltz) op 99; Mephistus Hell's Calls (Waltz) op 101; Hermann Polka op 91; Vöslauer Polka op 100; Albion Polka op 102; Kaiser-Jäger-March op 93; Viribus unitis (March) op 96; Slaven Ball Quadrille op 88; Mask Festival Quadrille op 92; Promenade Quadrille op 98 and Vivat! Quadrille op 103.
