- May 9 : François Bullier opens the Jardin Bullier dance hall in Paris
- September 11th : The catchy tune Oh! Susannah (I come from Alabama) by the composer Stephen Collins Foster will be performed for the first time in a saloon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania .
- December 10 : The Carltheater in Leopoldstadt near Vienna, built according to plans by architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll , is ceremoniously opened. The evening begins with a gala overture by the Stuttgart court conductor Peter Joseph von Lindpaintner , who is a friend of the theater director Carl Carl .
- Adolphe Adam composes the Christmas carol Minuit, Chrétiens based on a poem by Placide Cappeau . It is best known today in the English version Oh Holy Night .
Instrumental and vocal music (selection)
- Under the impression of the death of his sister Fanny Hensel , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed his last work, the String Quartet No. 6 , which he completed in September. Two months later, like his sister, he dies of a stroke. The oratorio earth, hell and heaven remains unfinished.
- Frédéric Chopin : Trois Valses (including the so-called minute waltz) op 64; Sonata for violoncello and piano in G minor op 65 (completed in 1846, published in 1847); Dix-sept mélodies polonaises op 74 (completed in 1847, published posthumously in 1859).
- Robert Schumann : Trio for piano, violin and violoncello No. 1 in D minor, op. 63; Trio for piano, violin and violoncello No. 2 in F major op. 80; Three songs for male choir , op. 62; Ritornelle in canonical ways for polyphonic male singing , op.65.
- Clara Schumann : Trio for pianoforte, violin and violoncello, G minor op 17 (published in 1847); Concerto in F minor for piano and orchestra (fragment).
- Giuseppe Verdi : Il poveretto ( “The Beggar” ), romance for a voice and piano.

- January 26th : The world premiere of the operetta A rural engagement party in Sweden by Franz Berwald takes place at the Theater an der Wien near Vienna .
- February 4th : The world premiere of the opera buffa Il birraio di Preston ( The Brewer of Preston ) by Luigi Ricci on a libretto by Francesco Guidi takes place with success at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence.
- February 18th : Premiere of the opera Vielka by Giacomo Meyerbeer at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
- March 14th : Giuseppe Verdi's opera Macbeth has its world premiere at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence . The libretto by Francesco Maria Piave is based on the tragedy of the same name by William Shakespeare . The opera is enthusiastically received by the audience, while the critics react rather cautiously and criticize the lack of a love scene.
- May 31 : World premiere of the one-act opera La bouquetière by Adolphe Adam in Paris.
- July 22nd : Giuseppe Verdi's opera I masnadieri based on a libretto by Andrea Maffei based on the play Die Räuber by Friedrich Schiller will be premiered under the direction of the composer at the Royal Opera House on Haymarket in London. Here, too, the audience reacted enthusiastically, while the critics expressed reservations.

- November 25th : Martha or Der Markt zu Richmond , a romantic-comic opera in 4 acts by Friedrich von Flotow and Friedrich Wilhelm Riese , is premiered at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
