Alexander Quadrille
The Alexander Quadrille is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 33). It was performed for the first time on June 16, 1847 in front of the Metzl coffee house in Vienna .
Remarks
Against the background of the competition between the composer and his father , the younger Strauss was forced to recruit his audience beyond the Viennese middle class. The bourgeoisie loyally stood by the father's side. The son therefore tried to win over young people in general and marginalized groups in Viennese society. The Serbs Quadrille (op. 14) arose from this endeavor . The Alexander Quadrille was initially listed under the title Second Serb Quadrille and dedicated to Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević (1806-1885). After the world premiere in Vienna, Strauss also played the work on his trip to the Balkans in Belgrade and Bucharest. He made the above-mentioned dedication in Belgrade. The dedication caused confusion because the dedicatee was a political enemy of Mihailo Obrenović , to whom the Serb Quadrille had been dedicated. In addition, the first performance in Vienna was in honor of Prince Obrenović. It is not known how all of this was finally resolved. The renaming to the Alexander Quadrille is likely related to these irritations. The quadrille, like the Serbian quadrille , uses mainly Serbian motifs. It is not one of the best known and most successful works by the composer.
The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 5 minutes and 34 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
