Serb Quadrille

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Serbian Quadrille is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 14). It was performed for the first time on January 28, 1846 in the Grazien Halls in Vienna .

Remarks

The quadrille was commissioned by Prince Miloš Obrenović (1780–1860). This former regent was overthrown in Belgrade in 1839 and lived in exile in Vienna with his son Mihailo Obrenović (1823–1868) and some followers. The aim of the two princes was to return to Serbia. In this endeavor, they organized events in Vienna for other exiled Serbs living there. Such a closed event took place on January 28, 1846 in the Graces Halls . Johann Strauss (son) performed this desired composition among other things. This was well received by the Serbs. This quadrille was also dedicated to the younger of the two princes. The first public performance took place on February 2, 1846 at the same location. As a result, the work disappeared from the concert schedule. The orchestral version was lost. This is why the CD recording mentioned below was orchestrated by Professor Ludwig Babinski .

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 5 minutes and 50 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
