from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The quadrille based on motifs from the opera “The Siege of Rochelle” is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 31). It was first performed on November 15, 1846 in Dommayers Casino in Vienna.

Remarks

This quadrille was composed based on motifs from the opera The Siege of Rochelle by Michael William Balfe . The Irish opera composer had already provided the motifs for another Strauss quadrille with his operas Der Liebesbrunnen and Die Zigeunerin . See op.10 and op.24 . The opera was successfully premiered in 1835 at the Theater Royal Drury Lane in London. The Vienna premiere in the Theater an der Wien was a failure. The then celebrated singer Jetty Treffz , who later became the wife of Johann Strauss, could not prevent that. The quadrille over the siege of Rochelle experienced a similar fate as the opera in Vienna. The first performance was noticed in passing and then the work disappeared in the archives.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 5 minutes and 14 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
