Quadrille after the opera "Der Liebesbrunnen"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The quadrille after the opera "Der Liebesbrunnen" is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 10). It was first performed on November 9, 1845 in Vienna's Prater .

Remarks

The work deals with themes from the opera Der Liebesbrunnen by Michael William Balfe . Johann Strauss had already written this quadrille before the opera's Vienna premiere in anticipation of its success. Contrary to this expectation, the opera failed in Vienna and was canceled after three performances. The singer Jetty Treffz , who later became Johann Strauss' first wife, also disappointed at the opera premiere on November 4, 1845 in the Theater an der Wien . Despite this failure of the opera, Johann Strauss presented his Quadrille on November 9th in Wagner's coffeehouse in Vienna's Prater. The work was received a little better than the opera. But it couldn't hold up in the long term either. The orchestral version has meanwhile been lost. The CD recording mentioned below was therefore arranged by Professor Ludwig Babinski on the basis of a piano reduction. In the following years Strauss wrote about other operas by Balfe Quadrillen, which were no more successful than this one. (compare Op. 24 and Op. 31 ).

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 5 minutes and 34 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
