- September 28 : The Swedish soprano Jenny Lind gives her first concert in the USA on her tour in New York City, organized by PT Barnum , and thus triggers a storm of enthusiasm. Your companion at the piano is the Briton Julius Benedict .
- The song Camptown Races by Stephen Foster first appears in print.

- Hector Berlioz : The composer publishes the oratorio La fuite en Égypte . Together with the work L'enfance du Christ composed in 1853 and 1854, the composition is today listed under Op. 25 led.
- Robert Schumann completed his 3rd Symphony in E flat major, Op. 97 , between November 7th and December 9th, 1850. The work is also known as the Rhenish Symphony . He also publishes the piano piece Children's Ball, Six Easy Dance Pieces , Op. 130.
- Michail Iwanowitsch Glinka composes the choral work Farewell Song of the Schoolgirls of the Society for Higher Daughters.
- Franz Lachner completes his Octet in B flat major, Op. 156.
- Niels Wilhelm Gade completes his Symphony No. 4 in B flat major , op.20

- February 28 : The composer Luigi Ricci premieres his opera Crispino e la comare at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice . The libretto is by Francesco Maria Piave .
- April 20 : The Opéra-comique in three acts Le songe d'une nuit d'été (German title: The Midsummer Night's Dream ) by Ambroise Thomas with a libretto by Joseph-Bernard Rosier and Adolphe de Leuven becomes the Opéra-Comique in the Salle Favart premiered in Paris .
- June 25 : Genoveva , the only opera by Robert Schumann , is premiered at the Staatstheater Leipzig under the direction of the composer with Marianne Lüdeke in the title role.
- July 28th : The opera Giralda ou La Nouvelle Psyché by Adolphe Adam with a libretto by Eugène Scribe is premiered in Paris at the Opéra-Comique.
- August 28 : The world premiere of the romantic opera Lohengrin by Richard Wagner takes place at the Grand Ducal Court Theater of Weimar under the direction of Franz Liszt . Karl Beck sings the title role . The basis of the material is the figure of Loherangrîn in Wolfram von Eschenbach's Middle High German verse epic Parzival . With the new form of opera, the well- composed musical drama, Wagner sets himself apart from the conventional structure of number operas with arias , recitatives and choral parts .
- October 10 : The opera La conquista di Granata by Emilio Arrieta is premiered in Madrid at the Teatro de Real Palacio. the libretto is from Temistocle Solera .
- November 16 : The opera Stiffelio by Giuseppe Verdi based on a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave is premiered at the Theatro Grande in Trieste.
- November 19 : In Madrid, the opera Teatro Real opens on the site of the former De los Caños del Peral opera house with a performance of the 1840 opera La favorite by Gaetano Donizetti in the presence of Queen Isabella II .
- December 28th : The comic opera La Dame de pique by Jacques Fromental Halévy with text by Eugène Scribe is premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. In the same year Halvey's opera La tempesta also premiered. The play is based on the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare .
