- Robert Schumann attempts suicide on February 27th by throwing himself into the Rhine. He is saved by the bridge master Joseph Jüngermann and other unknown men.
- May 30 : In Bari , the Teatro Piccinni opera house, named a year later in honor of the composer Niccolò Piccinni , who was born in the city, opens.
Instrumental music
- Robert Schumann composes the ghost variations . It is the last work by the composer before he is admitted to the mental hospital in Bonn-Endenich.
- Richard Wagner publishes the Zurich Vielliebchen Waltz , one of the composer's few piano pieces.
- The Piano Concerto No. 3 in G major op. 45 by Anton Grigoryevich Rubinstein is played for the first time.
- Joachim Raff composes La Fée d'Amour, a concert piece for violin and orchestra, op.67.
- Johannes Brahms brings out the following works: Sonata No. 2 in F sharp minor, Op. 2; Scherzo in E flat minor op.4 and the Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor opus 5. He also composes variations on a theme by Robert Schumann op.9 . In the same year he also composed the Four Ballads op.10 .
- Franz Liszt completes the symphonic poem Les Preludes .

- June 11 : The song Die Wacht am Rhein of max schneckenburger is with the music of Carl Wilhelm occasion of the silver wedding of the Prussian Prince William, the future Emperor I. Wilhelm , premiered.
Musical theater
- February 16 : At the Paris Opéra-Comique , the opera L'étoile du nord ( North Star ) by Giacomo Meyerbeer premiered. In a modified second version, the opera will also premiere on July 19 at the Royal Opera House in London. For this work Meyerbeer used six numbers from his Singspiel Ein Feldlager in Schlesien . Ludwig Rellstab translates the libretto by Eugène Scribe in the same year, and in late 1854 can be brought opera in Stuttgart on stage.
- March 22nd : The world premiere of the opera Die Nibelungen by Heinrich Dorn takes place in Weimar.
- April 20 : The opera Die Iconsturmer by Johann Friedrich Kittl has its world premiere at the Estates Theater in Prague.
- June 24th : 26 years after the composer's death, the opera Alfonso und Estrella by Franz Schubert is premiered under the direction of Franz Liszt at the Weimar Court Theater . The libretto was written by Franz von Schober .
- October 18 : The world premiere of the opera La nunne sanglante ( The Bloody Nun ) by Charles Gounod takes place in Paris.
- December 10 : The oratorio L'enfance du Christ by Hector Berlioz is performed in full for the first time. It consists of the three parts Le songe d'Hérode ( The dream of Herod ), La fuite en Égypte ( The flight into Egypt ) and L'arrivée à Sais ( The arrival in Sais ).
- December 16 : The three-act opera Le muletier de Tolède by Adolphe Adam based on a libretto by Adolphe Philippe d'Ennery and Charles Clairville is premiered in Paris at the Théâtre-Lyrique.
- December 21 : The world premiere of the comic opera Der Advokat by Ferdinand Hiller takes place in Cologne.
- December 24th : Just a week after the world premiere of his previous opera, Adolphe Adam also performed his one-act opera À Clichy, épisode de la vie d'un artiste for the first time at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris . The libretto is by Adolphe Philippe d'Ennery and Eugène Grange.
Further stage work premieres:
- Emilio Arrieta : The composer writes the Zarzuela La cacería real .
- In Weimar, the opera Die Siberischen Jäger by Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein will be performed for the first time in German-speaking countries. The work is a translation of the Russian opera Sibirskie ochotniki .
- Charles Gounod composes the little oratorio Tobie .
