Myrtle wreaths

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Myrtle wreaths is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 154). The work was performed for the first time on April 27, 1854 in the Knights' Hall of the Hofburg in Vienna.

Remarks

The work was composed and performed on the occasion of the wedding of Emperor Franz Joseph I with Elisabeth of Bavaria (Sisi). However, the waltz still bore the title Elisabethen-Klaenge at that time . Strauss wanted to honor the young empress. Musically, the composer quotes the Austrian imperial anthem by Joseph Haydn and the Bayern song by Franz Lachner . He wanted to highlight the new connection between the two states. For reasons of court etiquette, the title of the waltz had to be renamed to Myrtle Wreaths .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 9 minutes and 15 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can vary by up to about a minute plus or minus.
