Richard von Perger
Richard von Perger (born January 10, 1854 in Vienna ; † January 11, 1911 there ) was an Austrian composer, conductor and music teacher .
Life
After attending secondary school, the son of the painter and writer Anton von Perger took cello lessons from Franz Schmidtler and private composition lessons from Carl Zellner . As a scholarship holder, he was able to study with Johannes Brahms from 1880–82 . From 1890 to 1895 he headed the Rotterdam Conservatory and was also the conductor of the Maatschappij tot Bevordering van Toonkunst section there . In 1895 he returned to Vienna and became concert director of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde , whose conservatory he headed from 1899 to 1907. In addition, between 1899 and 1901, alongside Eduard Kremser, he was the conductor of the Vienna Men's Choir . In 1904 he was honored as an officer of the Paris Académie des Beaux-Arts .
In addition to chamber music works, von Perger composed serenades, polyphonic chants and several stage works ( The Judge of Granada , 1889, opera; Die 14 Nothelfer , 1891, Singspiel; Das steel castle , 1903, musical fairy tale in 4 pictures). With Robert Hirschfeld he wrote a history of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde , which appeared in 1912.
His brother was the chemist Hugo von Perger .
