Alliance march

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Alliance march is a march by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 158). The work was performed for the first time on December 26, 1854 in Vienna's Volksgarten .

Remarks

The march, like the Napoleon March , came about against the backdrop of the looming Crimean War . The Austrian diplomats were not ready to support the Russian Tsar Nicholas I in this conflict. There was a strong faction in the Danube monarchy that tended to support the opposite side, i.e. France and England. Ultimately, the Danube Monarchy remained neutral in the war. Russia never forgave the government's attitude in Vienna, and tensions culminated in World War I in 1914 . With the Alliance March , Johann Strauss paid tribute to the alliance (the alliance) between France and England. The first performance took place in the then newly laid out Vienna Volksgarten . Like the Napoleon March , this work soon fell into oblivion after initial success, which the composer could only love. He was not interested in being reminded of these works on his later trips to Pavlovsk , Russia. It could have damaged his sympathies there. In addition, the orchestral version of the work was lost. It was not until the end of the 20th century that an engraving model was rediscovered, which was used to make the CD recording mentioned below.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 2 minutes and 45 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
