Coronation march

The Coronation March is a march by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 183). The work was first performed on September 25, 1856 in Pavlovsk , Russia.

Remarks

The work was written on the occasion of the composer's first trip to Russia in the summer of 1856. The background was the coronation of Tsar Alexander II. The march was dedicated to the new Tsar. At the same time, Strauss wrote the waltz Coronation Songs , which he dedicated to Tsarina Marija Alexandrovna . Johann Strauss was a welcome guest in Russia at the time. He was not seen as a representative of Austrian politics, but simply as a musician. Politically, the two states had been enemies since the Crimean War .
