Coronation songs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coronation Songs is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op.184). The work was first performed on August 14, 1856 in Pavlovsk , Russia , and dedicated to the Tsarina .

Remarks

The waltz was written during the composer's trip to Russia in the summer of 1856 on the occasion of the coronation celebrations of Tsar Alexander II (1818–1881) and his wife Marie von Hessen-Darmstadt (1824–1880). While Strauss dedicated his Coronation March (op. 183) to the Tsar, the waltz Coronation Songs was dedicated to his wife. The waltz was well received and is still regarded by Strauss experts as one of his masterpieces, even if it lags behind the composer's great successes in terms of fame. The first performance in Vienna took place on the occasion of a ball on February 16, 1857 in the Sofienbad Hall .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 11 minutes and 53 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
