Short stories (waltzes)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Novellen is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 146). The work was performed for the first time on January 31, 1854 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The work was composed on the occasion of a ball of law students at Vienna University. The term novellas is to be understood here with the legal meaning. By this, lawyers mean changes to the law or contract texts. This waltz is significant from a musical history point of view because the composer here, as in the waltz Schallwellen , which was performed a few days later , used a more modern stylistic form at the time and based himself on the composers Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner , who had been frowned upon in the Danube Monarchy . The reviews were accordingly different. In addition to a lot of approval, there were also many critical voices. Among them were celebrities such as B. Johann Nestroy and the music critic Eduard Hanslick , who in any case observed the works of Johann Strauss very critically. The new musical direction that Strauss took here was dismissed as future music without a present . On the other hand, with his commitment to Wagner (he also performed Wagner's music with his orchestra), the composer contributed to making his music known in the Habsburg lands and especially in Vienna.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 7 minutes and 36 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
