North Star Quadrille

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The north star quadrille is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 153). It was first performed on July 30, 1854 in Ungers Casino in Vienna.

Remarks

The quadrille was composed of motifs from the opera L'étoile du nord (Eng. Title: The North Star ) by Giacomo Meyerbeer . Some numbers of this opera were already known to the audience from the Meyerbeer opera Vielka because they were also included in it. Johann Strauss wrote his Quadrille in the summer of 1854 while on vacation in Bad Gastein . Immediately after his return to Vienna, he brought the work to Unger's Casino. In contrast to the two operas mentioned, the quadrille has held up to this day. The operas have largely disappeared from the repertoire, while the North Star Quadrille is still occasionally performed. Johann Strauss wrote further quadrilles on operas by Meyerbeer. (See op. 224 and 299 ).

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 5 minutes and 44 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
