Express mail polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schnellpost-Polka is a polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 159). The work was performed for the first time on November 27, 1854 in Schwenders Casino in Vienna.

Remarks

This Schnellpolka was composed and performed for the Katharinenball in Schwender's establishment . It is an extension of the classic polka, which is particularly evident in the fast playing (and dancing) speed. The boundaries to the musical gallop are blurred here. The reason why the name Schnellpost-Polka was chosen is not known. The explanations are based on the name of a newspaper of the same name ( Wiener Schnellpost ), or from the magazine Schnellpost for literature, theater and sociability published by Moritz Saphir . A third possibility would be that Strauss simply wanted to point out that he had composed his first Schnellpolka with this.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 2 minutes and 18 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
