La Viennoise polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The La Viennoise Polka is a polka mazurka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 144). The work was first performed on February 23, 1854 in the Zum Sperl dance hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The polka was composed and performed at a private ball by the dance teacher Franz Rabensteiner in the Zum Sperlbauer dance hall . The name La Viennoise identifies this form of dance as a Viennese dance, which, considering its originally Polish-Bohemian origin, is wrong. In Vienna this form of polka became increasingly popular in those years against the resistance of conservative citizens.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 13 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
