Citizen Ball Polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bürgerball-Polka is a polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 145). The work was performed for the first time on February 14, 1854 in the Redouten Hall of the Vienna Hofburg .

Remarks

The polka was composed for the citizens' ball during Mardi Gras in 1854 and also performed at this event in the Hofburg. The work was then also dedicated to the citizens. The background to the whole event was a rapprochement between the imperial family, which made its premises in the residence available on this occasion, to the people. Since the events of the revolution of 1848 and the subsequent neo-absolutist phase, the relationship between the people and the authorities was tense. Since the artist's ball took place on the same day in the Sofienbad hall , at which the Strauss band also played, it was split up so that both dates could be attended. At the artists' ball , among other things, the muse polka was premiered.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 2 minutes and 31 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
