Ball event in the Sperlsaal

Zum Sperl was the name of a dance hall in the Viennese suburb of Leopoldstadt , since 1850 in the 2nd district of Vienna, which had its heyday with prominent musicians in the Biedermeier period. It was located in a side street of Taborstrasse , diagonally across from the Carmelite Church , at today's address Kleine Sperlgasse 2c .

history

At the time of the Napoleonic Wars , several dance halls were opened in Vienna, including the “Apollosaal” in the suburb of Neubau and the “Goldene Strauss” in the suburb of Josefstadt . They reached their peak after the end of the war during the Congress of Vienna in 1814/1815.

The previous owner of the restaurant had been the imperial hunter Johann Georg Sperlbauer since 1701, who ran the “Zum Sperlbauer” inn here in the 18th century, which subsequently gave the “Sperl” its name.

His granddaughter married Johann Georg Scherzer (1776-1858), in 1819 co-founder of the First Austrian Spar-Casse , who had run the restaurant since 1802 and bought it in 1806. He completely rebuilt it in 1807. Scherzer had the front of the alley widened to the front, laid out a garden in the back and added a dance hall to the bar. The opening of the newly built dance hall took place on Sunday, September 27, 1807, as Scherzer announced the day before in the Wiener Zeitung . (Some later texts, most recently Felix Czeike in the Historisches Lexikon Wien , mentioned September 29, 1807 without citing the source.)

The appearance of musicians such as Michael Pamer , Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauss Vater made the establishment very popular and one of the most popular entertainment venues in Vienna. Johann Strauss' father dedicated Sperl's Festwalzer (op 30) to the bar in 1830 , the Sperl Gallop (op 42) in 1831 and the Sperl Polka (op 133) in 1839 . Ferdinand Raimund advertised the restaurant with a song in his magic posse, Der Diamant des Geisterkönig . Scherzer expanded the business with another hall, which was called the "Fortuna Hall" and was opened on January 9, 1834; Strauss had composed the Fortuna Gallop for the occasion . The Sperl was so popular that 20 to 30 balls were held every year during Carnival.

In 1835 Scherzer leased the restaurant to his sons Johann Georg Scherzer (the younger, 1811 – after 1859) and Josef Leonhard Scherzer (1813–1845). In 1839 the Sperl was redesigned in the style of the Parisian halls and was considered a particularly elegant establishment. Johann Georg jun. separated from his brother on business in 1837; The father took over the business himself again and leased it in 1843. In 1849 Johann Strauss father performed here for the last time before his death.

In 1857 Scherzer sen. the establishment shortly before his death. As a result, it degenerated into an entertainment venue for dodgy society and a meeting place for the demimonde. In 1873 the Sperl was closed and demolished. Instead, the communal high school on Sperlrealität , 1898 kk Staatsgymnasium, now called Sperlgymnasium , was built here in 1876/1877 .

Others

The Kleine Sperlgasse and the Große Sperlgasse were named after the restaurant in 1862, the Scherzergasse in 1875 after the founder. Until then (e.g. on the Vasquez city map around 1830) the Kleine Sperlgasse was simply called Sperlgasse, the Große Sperlgasse was called Herrengasse.
