- January 30th : The Hallé Orchestra has its first appearance as a symphony orchestra in its hometown of Manchester .
- May 8th : The Vienna Singing Academy is founded as the first mixed choir association in Vienna.
- May 15 : With the opera Les Huguenots by Giacomo Meyerbeer , the Royal Italian Opera opens in its present form in London's Covent Garden after it burned down on March 5, 1856 .
- Jacques Fromental Halévy begins work on his last opera Noé , which will remain unfinished.
- Hector Berlioz begins work on his opera Les Troyens . The full version will not be premiered until 1890.
Instrumental and vocal music (selection)
- November 24th : Johann Strauss (son) gives a concert with his brother Josef in the Großer Zeisig , an inn on Spittelberg in Vienna. Among other things, the Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka op 214 premiered with great success. The piano sheet music published by the publisher Carl Haslinger is sold out within a few hours. The composer also brought out the following works in 1858: Vibrationen (Waltz) op 204; Die Extravaganten (Waltzes) op 205; Cycloids (Waltz) op 207; Jux Brothers (Waltz) op 208; Spiralen (waltz) op 209; Farewell to St. Petersburg (waltz) op 210; Flight of Thoughts (Waltz) op 215; L'Enfantillage-Polka op 202; Hellenic Polka op 203; Concordia Polka op 206; Champagne polka op 211; Bonbon Polka op 213; La Favorite Polka op 217; Fürst-Bariatinsky-Marsch op 212 and the Artists Quadrille op. 201
- The 1st piano concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns successfully premiered. The work is dedicated to the pianist Marie Jaëll .
- Franz Berwald composes the duo for violoncello (or violin) and piano in B flat major .
- Giuseppe Verdi presents his chamber music La preghiera del poeta to the public.
- Niels Wilhelm Gade composes the cantatas Baldurs drøm (Baldur's Dream) and Foraars Budskab (Spring Message) .
- Richard Wagner completes the song cycle Wesendonck songs .
Music theater and oratorios (selection)
- January 1 : The world premiere of the opera Halka of Stanisław Moniuszko will take place on Teatr Wielki in Warsaw. Despite massive criticism from the reactionary press of the Russian occupiers, the patriotic Polish opera is a great success.
- January 14th : Max Bruch's opera Scherz, List und Rache based on the libretto by Ludwig Bischoff is premiered in Cologne .
- January 15 : World premiere of the opera Le médecin malgré lui by Charles Gounod at the Théâtre-Lyrique, Paris. The work is based on the comedy The Doctor against Will by Molière . The German version of the opera also received this title.
- February 17th : The Opéra-comique Monsieur de Chimpanzé by Aristide Hignard based on a libretto by Jules Verne has its world premiere at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
- March 3 : First performance of the operetta Mesdames de la Halle by Jacques Offenbach in Paris, Bouffes-Parisiens, Salle Choiseul. Armand Lapointe wrote the libretto.
- April 19 : The one-act operetta La chatte métamorphosée en femme ( The transformed cat ) by Jacques Offenbach with the libretto by Eugène Scribe will be performed at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
- September 24th : The premiere of the opera Flis ( The Raftsman ) by Stanisław Moniuszko takes place in Warsaw.
- October 21 : At the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris, the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld by Jacques Offenbach is premiered . Offenbach's first full-length work based on a libretto by Hector Crémieux was a sensational success.
- December 15 : At the world premiere of the comic opera The Barber of Baghdad by Peter Cornelius at the Weimar Court Theater with Rosa von Milde and Hans Feodor von Milde in the leading roles, a theater scandal breaks out as opponents of Franz Liszt and his conductor, who is at the podium represented New German School disrupt the performance. After this scandal, Liszt resigned his posts as opera director and court conductor and the opera was dismissed. Cornelius takes the failure as an opportunity to leave Weimar. The opera will not be performed again during his lifetime.
- December 25 : The Christmas oratorio Oratorio de Noël , which Camille Saint-Saëns completed after only 12 days of work on December 15 , will have its world premiere in the La Madeleine church in Paris with the composer on the organ.
- December 28 : The world premiere of the opera Satanella or the Power of Love by Michael William Balfe takes place at Covent Garden in London.

- Giovanni Pacini's opera Il saltimbanco will be premiered at the Teatro Argentina in Rome.
- Jacques Fromental Halévy is performing his opera La magicienne for the first time. It is one of the last operas to be premiered by the composer.
- The opera Les Désespérés by François Bazin also premiered in 1858.
- The ballet Die Gruppe der Thetis by Friedrich von Flotow is premiered in Schwerin .
- Emilio Arrieta composes the Zarzuelas El planeta Venus , (3 acts with a libretto Ventura de la Vega ) and Azón Visconti (also in 3 acts with a libretto by Antonio García Gutiérrez ).
- Giovanni Bottesini is performing his four-act opera Il Diavolo della Notte for the first time in Milan . The libretto is by Luigi Scalchi.
