Cycloids

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cycloiden is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 207). The work was performed for the first time on February 10, 1858 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The waltz was composed and performed for the technicians' ball in Mardi Gras in 1858. It is dedicated to the technology students at the University of Vienna. The term cycloid (or wheel line) comes from geometry or mechanics and describes a curved line. With that, at least those who listened to the waltz could and can do something. Johann Strauss felt the same way. He had to accept the name given by the technicians. He finally composed a waltz that reflects the tensions between the traditional Viennese waltzes and the emerging innovations that Strauss himself encouraged. These innovations primarily include stylistic influences from contemporary composers such as Franz Liszt , Giacomo Meyerbeer and Richard Wagner . This work draws its special charm from this contrast.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 12 minutes and 37 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
