Performance venues
- On the night of June 8th to 9th, the theater on Franz-Josefs-Kai in Vienna , which had been in existence since 1860 , fell victim to a fire. Director Karl Treumann then gave up the plan to build his own theater and took over the management of the Carltheater again on August 19th .
- Emperor Franz Joseph I. gives the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna in the area of the Vienna Ringstrasse free of charge an area for the construction of a concert building . The architect Theophil Hansen is commissioned with the design .
World premieres
- February 12 : The world premiere of the opera The Armourers of Nantes by Michael William Balfe takes place at the Theater Royal in Covent Garden in London.
- April 18 : At the Quai Theater in Vienna, the operetta in one act fleet fellow of St. Francis of Suppè premiered. The libretto is by Josef Braun.
- May 1st : The opera Le Jardinier et son seigneur by Léo Delibes has its world premiere at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris.
- June 14th : The world premiere of the opera Die Loreley by Max Bruch takes place at the Hoftheater Mannheim .
- July 12 : The conversation alsacienne Lieschen and Fritzchen by Jacques Offenbach based on a libretto by Paul Boisselot has its world premiere in Bad Ems.
- September 30 : The world premiere of the opera Les pêcheurs de perles ( Die Perlenfischer ) by Georges Bizet based on the libretto by Michel Carré and Eugène Cormon takes place after a two-week delay with little success at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris. The work is soon forgotten. The original score is now considered lost, only a version based on a piano reduction is sometimes performed.
- November 4 : The opera Les Troyens by Hector Berlioz based on the Aeneid by Virgil has its world premiere at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris after several other opera houses have rejected the work. The small theater only performs the second half of the work under the title Les Troyens à Carthage, and Berlioz is bitterly disappointed with the inadequacy of the performance. But even in the abridged form, the opera is a great success. The entire work is only performed in full for the first time 21 years after the composer's death .
Compositions
- Johannes Brahms begins work on the cantata Rinaldo for a composition competition . However, since he will not finish the final chorus by the deadline for submission on October 1st, he has put the composition aside for several years.
- The Bohemian composer Bedřich Smetana completes the opera Die Brandenburger in Böhmen , which began last year . However, it was not premiered until 1866 .
- Anton Bruckner composes the study symphony . In the next few years he tried in vain to get a performance.
- Gioacchino Rossini composes the Petite Messe solennelle .
Light music
Johann Strauss (son) : The composer published the following works in 1863: Leading article (waltz) op 273; Patriot Polka op 274; Peasant Polka op 276; Invitation a la Polka-Mazur op 277; New Life (Polka) op 278; and the Lieder-Quadrille op 275.

- Jules Massenet receives the 1st main prize of the Prix de Rome in the field of music.

- October 28 : The Dutch pianist Suzanne Leenhoff marries the French painter Édouard Manet , who is two years her junior and with whom she has lived for years. Suzanne's son, Léon , is introduced to Manet's family and Parisian society as her younger brother.
- November 1st : The re-established Cologne Cathedral Choir has its first public appearance.
- November 21 : The 20-year-old Carl Michael Ziehrer makes his debut as a composer and conductor with his band in the Dianabadsaal in Vienna's Leopoldstadt .
- Until then because of his sympathy for the Revolution of 1848/1849 disgraced Johann Strauss (son) is of Emperor Franz Joseph I to the kk Court Ball Music Director appointed.
- Summer: Franz Liszt retires from Rome to the Madonna del Rosario monastery on Monte Mario , where, among others, Pope Pius IX. visited.
- When Johnny Comes Marching Home song is released. It is based on the Irish anti-war ballad Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye .
- Franz Mair , former choir director of the Vienna Men's Choir Association , founds the Schubertbund teachers' choir after a falling out with the club in the “Zur neue Welt” inn in Vienna .
- The Cologne Cathedral Choir is re-established.
