Eugen Robert Weiss (born June 26, 1863 in Neu-Ulm , † January 15, 1933 in Munich ) was a German opera singer (baritone) and singing teacher.

Life

Weiss attended a grammar school in Augsburg and then studied at the Royal Music School in Munich from autumn 1883. His teachers were Hasselbeck and A. Schimon for singing , Brulliot for dramatic representation, Gluth for piano , Abel choral singing and Rheinberger, Thuille and Gluth for composition . In 1886 he completed his studies and was awarded the “Dr. Königswarter Honorary Award ”. He made his debut in 1888 at the Kroll Opera in Berlin. In the following season an engagement at the Rostock Theater followed. Until 1891 he worked as an opera singer on the stages in Sondershausen , Schwerin and Dortmund, after which he was engaged at the Weimar Court Theater until 1893. From 1894 Weiss worked as a concert singer, voice diagnostician, voice physiologist and singing teacher in Berlin, then in Wiesbaden, Düsseldorf and Essen.

In 1900 Weiss was appointed Kammersänger by Friedrich, Duke of Anhalt, and in 1913 received the Order of Merit for Art and Science in gold from the then Duke of Anhalt. His students were Sigrid Onégin , Margot Hinnenberg-Lefèbre , Marianne Mörner , Richard Tauber , bassist Carl Braun and Kammersänger Walther Kirchhoff .

In 1917 Weiss was appointed lecturer for solo, concert and dramatic singing at the Academy of Music in Munich, where he was awarded the title of professor in 1921. He also gained a good reputation as an organizer of private soirees. In November 1928 Jörgen Forchhammer, W. Freytag, Kammersänger Rudolph and ER Weiss founded the Association of Munich Voice Trainers and Singing Teachers.

He married Luise Dorothee Wilhelmine Gertrud Friedrich on May 20, 1895. From this marriage a daughter, Katharina Klara Auguste Gertrud Senta, born on August 6, 1896 in Berlin, emerged. She later completed training as a concert singer (alto). In his second marriage he was married to the court opera singer Marie-Louise Müller-Weiss , who was engaged at the Wiesbaden court theater at the time. They had a son, Walter Hubert Weiss , profession: jazz and big band musician (1910–1950). In 1931 Weiss was retired. He died on January 15, 1933 after a concert in the Goethe Halls in Munich .
