- Giuseppe Verdi : The String Quartet in E minor , Verdi's only string quartet , will have its private premiere on April 1st in the reception hall of the Albergo della crocelle in Naples. It is the only Italian chamber music work of the 19th century that can survive in the concert repertoire.

- March 1 : The operetta Der Carneval in Rom by Johann Strauss is premiered in the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The text is by Joseph Braun, the lyrics by Richard Genée . Caroline Charles-Hirsch plays the role of Marie.
- April 11th : Premiere of the oratorio Marie-Magdeleine by Jules Massenet at the Odéon - Théâtre de l'Europe in Paris.
- April 15th : Premiere of the operetta Twenty-five Girls and No Man by Franz von Suppè in Vienna.
