Semen Hulak-Stepanowytsch Artemowskyj ( Ukrainian Семен Степанович Гулак-Артемовський , Russian Семён Степанович Гулак-Артемовский Semyon Stepanovich Gulak-Artemowski * February 4 . Jul / 16th February  1813 greg. In Horodyshche ; † April 5 jul. / 17th April  1873 greg. in Moscow ) was a Ukrainian opera singer (baritone) and composer, actor and playwright.

Life

Petro Hulak-Artemovsky's nephew first attended the theological seminary in Kiev . He was then a student of Mikhail Glinka and studied singing in Saint Petersburg and Florence from 1839 to 1842 . From 1842 he was bass-baritone at the Mariinsky Theater and the Italian Opera in Saint Petersburg. His repertoire included the title role in Ruslan in Michail Glinkas Ruslan and Lyudmila , the Masetto in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni , Antonio Gaetano Donizetti's Linda di Chamounix and Lord Ashton in his Lucia di Lammermoor .

Hulak-Artemowskyj's best-known work is the comic opera Saporoshez sa Dunajem ( The Zaporogers on the Danube , 1863), which is considered the first Ukrainian national opera . Further compositions were the opera The Ukrainian Wedding (1851), a vaudeville, several plays, a divertissement and songs. He dedicated the song There is a maple tree by the river to his longtime friend Taras Shevchenko .
