Greetings from Austria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greetings from Austria is a Polka - Mazurka by Johann Strauss II (op 359th). The work was performed for the first time on July 9, 1873 in the flower room of the Vienna Horticultural Society.

Remarks

The polka was put together based on motifs from the operetta Carnival in Rome . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 356 , 357 , 358 , and 360 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. The first performance took place in the context of the concerts on the occasion of the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 . A specially hired so-called world exhibition band played, which was actually Julius Langenbach's band, but was conducted by Strauss. Specifically, this was a charity concert for the benefit of small businesses. There is no direct reference between the title name and the operetta from which the music originates. The name is more likely to welcome the international visitors to the world exhibition in Austria.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 4 minutes and 3 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
