Musical theater

3 January : The first performance of the operetta Prinz Methusalem by Johann Strauss (son) , originally conceived for Paris, takes place at the Carltheater in Vienna. The composer is also a conductor.
March 4 : The ballet Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is premiered at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow . Since the Bolshoi Ballet is not yet at the level to dance the piece, the difficult parts are replaced by simpler pieces of music and the ballet fails with the audience.
March 10 : Richard Wagner performs the Siegfried Idyll in a court concert in Meiningen .

March 10 : The world premiere of the operetta Nanon, the landlady of the Golden Lamb by Richard Genée takes place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The libretto for the piece from the “ golden operetta era ” comes from the composer together with Camillo Walzel .

March 21 : World premiere of the opera Die Folkunger by Edmund Kretschmer in Dresden

April 27 : World premiere of the opera Le Roi de Lahore by Jules Massenet at the Grand Opéra Paris

September 23 : World premiere of the opera Francesca von Rimini by Hermann Goetz in Mannheim

December 2nd : The world premiere of the opera Samson et Dalila ( Samson and Dalila ) by Camille Saint-Saëns takes place in Weimar . The work became a huge success in Germany, while it was more than a decade before it was first performed in France.

December 8 : World premiere of the opera Heinrich der Löwe by Edmund Kretschmer in Leipzig
