Violin Concerto (Goldmark)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Op. 28 in A minor by the Hungarian composer Karl Goldmark was composed in 1877 and premiered in Bremen that same year . Today it is considered Goldmark's best-known and most-played work. It was written just a year before the Brahms and Tchaikovsky violin concertos .

music

The concert is classically divided into three movements:

  1. Allegro moderato
  2. Air. Andante
  3. Moderato

The sonata form can be found in the first movement as well as in the last movement . It is noteworthy, however, that these two cornerstones are exceptional in that the typical confrontation between two contrasting topics only takes place to a limited extent. The beginning is kept march-like by rhythmically strongly forced movements of the orchestra, but this impulse is softened by the use of the solo violin, since the theme now no longer appears marcato , but legato . This clearly removes the contrast to the main theme from the more subtle secondary theme of the exposition , which is also decisive for the implementation . In contrast to what is traditionally intended, there is no dialectical processing of the two themes here, but an orchestral fugue about the main theme. Here the music seems almost baroque at times due to its strong polyphony and dotted rhythm (comparable to a French overture), until the fugue almost ends in sonic chaos. A general break is followed by a solo by the soloist, which restores the main theme again. The recapitulation begins immediately afterwards .

A similar combination of almost aggressive orchestra and calming solo violin, comparable to the beginning of the first movement, can also be found in the last movement. Overall, the impression of a very lyrical concert is created, even if Goldmark, who himself found his way to music through the violin, also built in virtuoso passages that place high demands on the soloist.
