Nanon (sometimes the title is also "Nanon, the landlady" To the golden lamb "" ) is an operetta in three acts by Richard Genée . The libretto was written by F. Zell alias Camillo Walzel and the composer. It premiered on March 10, 1877 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.

The Marquis d'Aubigné has long had an eye on Nanon, the landlady "To the golden lamb". As a man of aristocracy, however, it is forbidden for him to get involved with a commoner, he does not reveal his real name to her. For Nanon he is the trumpeter Grignon. His campaign for the coveted beauty finally shows the hoped-for success. Not only does she confess her love to him, but she also reveals her desire to become his wife. But this goes too far for the Marquis. He just wants to keep her as his lover. When Nanon makes preparations to prepare for the wedding, the marquis breaks the ban on dueling imposed by the king and is arrested - and thus evades the marriage.

Nanon is desperate. She wonders how she can bail out her lover. Then the thought occurs to her to turn to the influential Ninon de Lenclos. When she is granted audience, she meets a man who looks astonishingly like her beloved trumpeter Grignon. He is introduced to her as "Marquis d'Aubigné". The unsuspecting Nanon thinks the similarity is just a coincidence.

The Marquis d'Aubigné secretly observes how Hector de Marsillac woos his revered Nanon violently. Now he can no longer hold back. As a hothead he provokes another duel. He injures his opponent Hector de Marsillac, which means that he is arrested again.

Nanon pulls out all the stops to help her lover. As a last resort, she even turns to the king - and lo and behold: Louis XIV gives the order that the Marquis d'Aubigné is to be released immediately. Now it dawns on Nanon that her supposed Grignon and the Marquis are one and the same person. She already believes that she has to renounce her love for him because of the difference in class when a small miracle occurs: The Marquis is so touched by how Nanon has sacrificed himself for him. Now he wants to do something for her too. He turns to Madame de Maintenon, who is well known to Louis XIV, for help. The happy ending is not long in coming. The king decreed that the Marquis d'Aubigné, as a nobleman, should be allowed to marry the bourgeois landlady Nanon.

Richard Genée's stage works also belong to the golden era of operettas , even if he did not achieve such high fame as a composer as, for example, his colleagues Carl Millöcker , Johann Strauss (son) and Franz von Suppè , for whom he wrote numerous libretti together with Camillo Walzel. Of his compositions, “Nanon” was the most successful and still looks fresh and elegant today.

The UFA filmed the operetta in 1938 under the title Nanon . Directed by Herbert Maisch , Erna Sack , Johannes Heesters , Otto Fee , Dagny Servaes and Oskar Sima played the leading roles in the 80-minute film . The music could not be heard in the original, but in an arrangement by Alois Melichar .
