Cesare Ciardi

Cesare Ciardi (born June 29, 1818 in Prato , † June 13, 1877 in Strelna ) was an Italian flautist and composer.

Life

Coming from Tuscany , Cesare Ciardi moved to Russia in 1853 . There he received a professorship at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and became Tchaikovsky's flute teacher . He was also the solo flutist at the Imperial Opera in Saint Petersburg (after Ciardi's death Ernesto Köhler succeeded him). Ciardi was versatile and also active as a sculptor and caricaturist.

Ciardi wrote numerous study and solo pieces for flute. His Carnaval russe for flute and piano (also in the orchestral version) is occasionally played to this day.
