- February 4th : Premiere of the operetta Das Herzblättchen by Franz von Suppè in the Carltheater in Vienna.
- February 10, world premiere of the opera Snowflake by Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimsky-Korsakow in the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
- July 26th : Richard Wagner's last music-dramatic work , the “Bühnenweihfestspiel” Parsifal successfully premiered at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus . The conductor is Hermann Levi . The stage design is by Paul von Joukowsky .
- August 20 : The world premiere of the 1812 Overture by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky takes place in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Tchaikovsky himself is skeptical of the piece, despite its success, and denies it any artistic value.
- October 29th : The premiere of Bedřich Smetana's opera The Devil's Wall in the Prague Interim Theater.
- November 25 : World premiere of Arthur Sullivan's comic opera Iolanthe at the Savoy Theater, London.
- December 6 : The world premiere of the operetta Der Bettelstudent by Karl Millöcker with the libretto by Friedrich Zell and Richard Genée takes place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna . The piece from the golden operetta era becomes one of the most popular German-language operettas .
