Luitpold Freiherr von Horn (born January 1, 1854 in Munich ; † June 22, 1914 there ) was a Bavarian general of the artillery .

Life

origin

Luitpold was a son of the Bavarian infantry general Karl von Horn (1818-1896) and his wife Magdalena, née Auernheimer (1818-1870). His older brother Carl (1847-1923) became Bavarian Colonel General and Minister of War .

Military career

After visiting the cadet corps , Horn joined the 3rd field artillery regiment "Queen Mother" of the Bavarian Army in 1872 as a second lieutenant . After a year of service in the 1st foot artillery regiment "von Bothmer" , he returned to his main regiment in 1881 and graduated from the military academy in 1882/85 , which made him qualified for the general staff. He rose to lieutenant , was commanded as adjutant of the 2nd field artillery brigade in 1887 and was promoted to captain in this capacity . With his appointment as head of the battery , he returned to military service in 1888 and in the same year was also an officer accompanying Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria . At the same time, the following year he was appointed as a deputy to the commission for testing the equipment of mounted artillery . In 1891 Horn was appointed a member of this commission and in 1892 he was appointed to the remont purchase commission within Bavaria. When he was promoted to major in 1894, he was first transferred to the Central Office of the General Staff and then to the General Staff of the 5th Division . In 1896 he was assigned to Berlin in the Great General Staff of the Prussian Army . Horn rose to lieutenant colonel in 1898 and was department commander in the 3rd field artillery regiment "Queen Mother". After being promoted to colonel in mid-August 1900, he was commander of the 5th field artillery regiment from April 15 to September 30, 1901 and then commander of the 1st field artillery regiment "Prince Regent Luitpold" . With promotion to major general , he was appointed head of department in the general staff on March 9, 1903. This was followed from April 10, 1905 to May 20, 1906 as a commander of the 6th Field Artillery Brigade . As a lieutenant general , Horn was then briefly commander of the 6th Division and was given command of the 5th Division on October 12, 1906. In this capacity, he was awarded the Order of Merit by St. Michael I Class in 1909 . On February 22, 1912 he was promoted to general of the artillery and commanding general of the III. Army Corps appointed. In 1914 it was put up for disposal .

family

Horn married on September 19, 1883 in Munich with Gabriele Freiin von Hornstein (1863–1888), a daughter of the landowner Robert Freiherr von Hornstein. The daughter Charlotte (* 1886) emerged from the marriage and married the Bavarian captain Otto Heller in 1906.
