Violetta (polka)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Violetta is a polka- French by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 404). The work was performed for the first time on January 15, 1882 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein .

Remarks

The polka was put together based on motifs from the operetta The Merry War . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 397 , 398 , 399 , 400 , 401 , 402 , 403 , 405 and 407 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. The title name corresponds to the main female character of this operetta. The first performance of the polka was conducted personally by the composer. Both the operetta The Funny War and the Polka Violetta were initially very popular and were often performed. During Johann Strauss' lifetime, the operetta The Funny War After the Fledermaus was the composer's most frequently performed stage work. In the course of the following years and decades the popularity of the operetta and this polka declined significantly.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 4 minutes and 3 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
