North and south (polka)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nord und Süd is a polka mazurka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 405). The work was performed for the first time on February 26, 1882 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein .

Remarks

The polka was put together based on motifs from the operetta The Merry War . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 397 , 398 , 399 , 400 , 401 , 402 , 403 , 404 , and 407 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. The polka was dedicated to the writer, journalist and theater director Paul Lindau . This dedication also explains the title name, which refers to the monthly magazine Nord und Süd published by Lindau . Lindau and Johann Strauss had been friends for a number of years and that is why the dedication is to be understood. The first performance of the polka took place on the occasion of the so-called Karnelvalsrevue in 1882 under the direction of Eduard Strauss .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 5 minutes and 16 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
