- August 9th : In Paris, the theater for the stereophonic transmission of opera and theater performances is presented for the first time over a telephone .

Musical theater
- January 31st : Premiere of the opera Gudrun by August Klughardt in Neustrelitz.
- February 10 : Four months after the death of the composer Jacques Offenbach's opera Les contes d'Hoffmann (Hoffmann's Tales) is premiered at the Paris Opéra-Comique , in which he has incorporated some melodies from his earlier opera Die Rheinnixen . The Opéra-comique becomes Offenbach's only successful opera.
- February 25 : The world premiere of the opera The Maid of Orléans by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky takes place at the Court Opera in Saint Petersburg.
- March 2nd : premiere of the operetta Der Gascogner by Franz von Suppè in the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
- March 24th : The opera Simon Boccanegra by Giuseppe Verdi is premiered at La Scala in Milan in a comprehensively revised version after it failed the audience in 1857. The second version met with great acclaim.
- April 23rd World premiere of the comic opera Patience or Bunthornes Bride by Arthur Sullivan in London.
- June 11 : The world premiere of Bedrich Smetana's opera Libuše , the Prague National Theater opened. The libretto comes from Josef Wenzig in the Czech translation by Ervín Špindler and is based on the Königinhofer manuscript, which was probably forged by Václav Hanka .
- October 29th : Premiere of the operetta Die Jungfrau von Belleville by Carl Millöcker at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
- November 25th : The operetta The Merry War by Johann Strauss (son) is premiered at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The libretto comes from the tried and tested team of F. Zell and Richard Genée .
- December 7th : The world premiere of the opera Das Käthchen von Heilbronn by Karl Reinthaler based on a libretto by Heinrich Bulthaupt , based on the play of the same name by Heinrich von Kleist , takes place in Frankfurt am Main.
- December 19 : The opera Hérodiade of Jules Massenet is the Théâtre de la Monnaie premiered in Brussels.
