Stormy in love and dance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stormy in Love and Dance is a Schnellpolka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 393). The work was performed for the first time on February 22, 1881 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna .

Remarks

The polka was put together based on motifs from the operetta The Queen's Lace. The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 391 , 392 , 394 , and 406 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. This series also includes the waltz Roses from the South (op. 388). This polka was arranged for the carnival ball of the writers and journalists' association Concordia and was premiered on this occasion. Strauss, who was not happy about the operetta The Queen's Lace because of the bad reviews in the press , published the work rather out of courtesy for Concordia . When putting together the polka, he used parts from the 3rd act and the finale of the first act of the operetta. The first performance was not conducted by the composer, but by his brother Eduard . The title name does not come from Johann Strauss himself, but from the humorist Jacques Kowy.

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 2 minutes and 9 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
