Matador march

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Matador March is a march by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 406). The place and date of the premiere are not known.

Remarks

The work was compiled based on motifs from the operetta The Queen's Lace Cloth, which premiered in 1880 . It thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 391 , 392 , 393 , and 394 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. This series also includes the waltz Roses from the South (op. 388). Compared to the other works compiled from this operetta, this march appeared much later. The main motif goes back to the bullfighting scene in the third act of the operetta. The Polka Burschenwanderung (op. 389) is also cited. There is only a piano reduction of the original version. It is uncertain whether there ever was an original orchestral version. Later there was at least one version for salon orchestra. The version that can be heard on the CD recording mentioned below was arranged by Gustav Fischer.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 21 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
